A comprehensive neck-stretching routine visualised in 3D anatomy — every muscle of the cervical spine, mobilised gently to release tension and restore healthy range of motion.

How to do it

  1. Sit tall in a chair or on the floor. Shoulders relaxed and dropped down.
  2. Slowly turn the head to the right — chin toward right shoulder. Hold 15 seconds. Return centre.
  3. Turn head to the left. Hold 15 seconds. Return centre.
  4. Tilt right ear toward right shoulder (do not lift shoulder). Hold 15 seconds. Return.
  5. Tilt left ear toward left shoulder. Hold 15 seconds. Return.
  6. Look up gently (chin toward ceiling). Hold 10 seconds. Return.
  7. Look down (chin toward chest). Hold 10 seconds. Slow shoulder rolls to finish.
The storyThe neck holds the weight of the head — about 5 kg for an adult. Every degree the head tilts forward multiplies that load: at 15 degrees forward (typical phone posture), the neck bears 12 kg. Modern life is a slow-motion neck injury. This practice is the daily antidote.
The scienceThis routine mobilises the upper cervical (C1-C2, atlas-axis), mid cervical (C3-C5), and cervico-thoracic junction (C6-T1). It lengthens the levator scapulae, upper trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, and suboccipitals. Regular practice has been shown to reduce tension headache frequency by up to 50% in some studies.
Heritage wisdomNeck mobility is one of the fundamental practices in the Siddha tradition — considered essential for maintaining the flow of vital energy between body and head. Master Segar teaches this routine as a daily practice for anyone whose work involves screens.
Who this is forAnyone with mild neck tension. Office workers, students, drivers. Excellent for teens through elderly.
Take careMove slowly and gently. Skip during acute neck injury, recent whiplash, or diagnosed disc problems. Never force — the neck responds better to soft, patient practice than to force.
Best timingBest done every 2 hours during screen work. Also excellent morning and before sleep.
Four-week progressionWeek 1: 15-second holds. Week 2: 20-second holds. Week 3: 25-second holds. Week 4: 30-second holds with focused breathing.
