3D Standing Body Awareness with Humming

A standing practice combining full-body awareness with resonant humming (Bhramari) — where the whole musculoskeletal system engages while the humming vibration soothes the nervous system.

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet hip-width apart, weight evenly distributed. Soft knees, tall spine.
  2. Close the eyes. Feel the sensation of standing — feet on floor, spine long, crown lifted.
  3. Inhale slowly through the nose.
  4. As you exhale, produce a soft, low humming sound — 'mmmm' — letting it last the entire exhale.
  5. Feel the vibration spreading through the skull, chest, and abdomen.
  6. Continue for 5 minutes. Notice how the body feels increasingly present.
  7. Return to silent breathing for 30 seconds before opening the eyes.
The storyThe most under-utilised practice in yoga is the intersection of standing posture and sound. When you stand consciously and hum, the vibration travels through every bone, every muscle, every organ. It is the fastest way to feel completely 'inside' your own body.
The scienceCombining upright postural engagement with humming vibration produces two simultaneous effects: proprioceptive activation (the body's sense of itself in space) and parasympathetic activation via the vagus nerve (which is stimulated by the humming vibration). This combined activation has been observed to reduce anxiety scores more rapidly than either practice alone.
Heritage wisdomThis practice combines two Siddha traditions — standing awareness (Tadasana) and Bhramari Pranayama (humming breath). Master Segar teaches this combination as a rapid nervous-system reset that can be done anywhere, no equipment needed.
Who this is forEveryone. Particularly valuable for those with anxiety, insomnia, or a scattered mind. Safe for all ages.
Take careNot for those with active ear infections or severe vertigo (standing may be unsteady). Practise near a wall if balance is a concern.
Best timingExcellent morning practice. Also useful mid-day as a reset. Not immediately before sleep — the humming can be energising.
Four-week progressionWeek 1: 3 minutes. Week 2: 5 minutes. Week 3: 5 minutes with deeper Bhramari. Week 4: 8 minutes as a standing meditation.
