Vajrasana After Meals: The Simplest Digestion Booster

The Thunderbolt Pose is the only yoga posture traditionally recommended AFTER eating. Sit in Vajrasana for 5 minutes after your meal and you activate a cascade of digestive processes that no walk, no medicine, no supplement can replicate as gently.

Vajrasana After Meals: The Simplest Digestion Booster

How to do it

  1. After finishing your meal, kneel on a soft mat or carpet with knees together.
  2. Sit back onto your heels — heels beside each hip, not tucked underneath. Big toes touching.
  3. Rest your palms on your thighs, spine tall, shoulders relaxed.
  4. Close your mouth, breathe softly through the nose. Chin slightly tucked.
  5. Sit for 5 minutes. Do not scroll your phone — the pose works best when you simply sit and breathe.
  6. To exit, gently shift weight to one side and stretch the legs out. Massage the knees briefly.
  7. Repeat after every major meal for best results.
The storyIn Malaysian and Indian households, elders often say 'sit properly after eating'. What they meant, without knowing the biomechanics, was Vajrasana. The tradition survived for a reason.
The scienceSitting on the heels with the spine erect gently compresses the abdomen and redirects blood flow from the limbs to the digestive organs. This increased visceral circulation supports the natural release of digestive enzymes. The upright spine keeps the diaphragm relaxed, preventing acid reflux — one reason Vajrasana is one of the few asanas that can be practised on a full stomach.
Heritage wisdomIn Siddha tradition, this pose is called Vajra Muni Asana — the posture of the thunderbolt sage. It is said to gently activate the Manipura chakra (solar plexus energy centre) which governs digestive fire (Agni). Master Segar's Siddha lineage teaches that 5 minutes of Vajrasana daily strengthens the digestive fire over weeks, reducing bloating and heaviness.
Who this is forAnyone with bloating, sluggish digestion, or heavy meals. Especially valuable for people over 40 whose digestion naturally slows. Safe for teens and adults alike.
Take careIf you have knee or ankle injuries, place a cushion or folded blanket between the heels and hips, or between the shins and floor. If knee discomfort persists, sit cross-legged instead. People with serious knee replacements should consult their doctor before practising.
Best timingImmediately after breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Not before meals.
Four-week progressionWeek 1: 3 minutes after your largest meal. Week 2: 5 minutes after two meals. Week 3: 5 minutes after every meal. Week 4: Add gentle abdominal breathing while in the pose.
